Leadership Opportunities Within Toastmasters

You start your leadership development in your own club. Every year, the club elects 7 people to organise the many activities which a club needs to run successfully.

These are:

  • President – acts as the chief executive of the club
  • Vice-President – organises meeting agendas and helps members develop their skills
  • Vice-President Membership – responsible for running membership building programs and keeping track of existing membership.
  • Vice-President Public Relations – promotes the club in the community, and often produces a regular club newsletter
  • Secretary – responsible for all meeting minutes, correspondence and maintenance of club records.
  • Treasurer – prepares budgets, tracks expenses, and is responsible for all club financial transactions, including sending membership fees to World Headquarters.
  • Sergeant-at-Arms – schedules club meeting locations, maintains club equipment and supplies and prepares the venue for each meeting.

Each of these roles has its own challenges and rewards. Other club members look to the executive for leadership, guidance and example. To many, it is an excellent preparation for leadership in the wider community.

Leadership Training

Toastmasters has a series of leadership training modules such as the Successful Club Series and Leadership Excellence Series. They are designed for presenting to clubs, for the benefit of all members.

Each year those in club executive positions receive free specialised training from experienced toastmasters in leadership, administration, membership building, goal setting and other topics in club management.

Those in higher positions receive further training in running contests and events, team building, achieving success standards, as well as more advanced leadership training.

Key training dates can be found on this web site: www.d70toastmasters.org. Follow the links to training on the ‘What’s On’ page.

Leadership Opportunities Beyond the Club

The 200 clubs in ACT/NSW are organised into 43 Areas and 8 Divisions, culminating in the District organisation which reports directly to World Headquarters. At each of these levels there are leadership and staff roles which contribute in a meaningful and rewarding way to the successful running of the wider organisation. Area Governors and Division Governors together with the Senior Policy Committee form and District Executive, one of the key decision making bodies of our organisation.

Members who have served as club executives often proceed to these higher leadership positions.

Leadership Awards

As well as the speaking awards, Toastmasters offers a program of development and achievement in leadership which culminates in the Competent leader and Advanced Leader awards.

Full details of these awards and how to attain them are contained in the Communication and Leadership Manual.

Those who attain both Advanced Toastmaster Gold and Advanced Leader become eligible for the Distinguished Toastmaster Award, the highest recognition a member may receive.
